Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is the Federal application for financial aid and is required in applying for any Federal loan. This application may also be needed in applying for State and or school funded loans. You can complete the FAFSA electronically or by filling out a paper form and mailing it in. In some cases, you may be able to apply directly through your school. You should check with the school you're planning to attend to see if the school provides assistance. Before you begin the application process we advise that you apply for a Personal Identification Number or PIN. This PIN allows your to sign the application electronically and is generally available within 5 - 10 days. Once you get the PIN you can complete the electronic application. To apply for a PIN, activate your PIN, change your PIN number, or change your personal information, go to the U.S. Department of Education web site and complete the PIN Registration. Please note that if you are a dependent student, one of your parents will need to sign the form too. They can also complete the PIN Registration.

If you choose to use the U.S. post office to send your application, you don't need to apply for a PIN. You may also choose to send the application form electronically, and send the signature page through the U.S. post office.

Before you begin

The application process is very simple, but there are some documents and you'll need:

  • your social security number
  • driver's license or state identification card
  • income tax return
  • investment records
  • your school Federal Code

You will also need to decide how you'll send the application form - electronically or through the post office.

Now that you have all of your documents, PIN and a completed worksheet, you can begin the application process. Simply go to FAFSA Web site. There you can choose to fill out the FAFSA for the first time, Renew a FAFSA on the Web or, make corrections to a processed FAFSA.
