Parent PLUS Loans
Parent PLUS Loans are designed for parents to help pay for your undergraduate courses if you are a dependent child. Federal Parent PLUS loans are available through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) or through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) programs. Your parents can get a loan through either program, but not both. They also must meet certain lending requirements and have a good credit history.
Depending on the school you plan to attend your mom and dad will either complete a Direct PLUS loan application or a FFEL PLUS Loan application. In either case, the application needs to be completed and sent to your college's financial aid office.
Should your parents credit history not be in great standing at the time, they can get help from a family member or friend who is willing to endorse the loan. This family member or friend must pass a credit check. Your parents might also qualify for a loan if they don't pass a credit check if they can demonstrate that there were extenuating circumstances that caused the negative rating. There are other eligibility requirements that must be met. Please see Loan Eligibility for more details.
If you're planning to attend graduate school, you might also be eligible for a Graduate Plus Loan.
